Hot Stone Massage
What is it?
Hot stone massage is a healing art that dates back some
5,000 years. Basalt stones are heated in water to about 120° F. and placed
on the body. The use of heated basalt stones has a dual effect on the
body. They provide deep, moist heat
to specific muscle groups, which increases circulation
and relieves tension and chronic pain.
Secondary to this, the stones have a magnetic quality,
due to their high iron content, that influences body processes on a
cellular level. This is because our
cells are like batteries, working on positive and negative ionic flow. These two key features work in tandem to
provide a profound healing response.
What does it do?
Hot stone massage is a deeply relaxing treatment that
helps to relieve tension, increase circulation and encourage balance within
the body. It is great for those who
feel a constant chill, as well as those who have trouble relaxing during
other forms of bodywork. You should
expect to feel very calm, relaxed and centered after a treatment.
What do I need to know?
Like traditional massage, hot stone massage is performed
on a massage table. Although hot stone massage is not a deep tissue
treatment, it may be more appropriate than deep tissue for those with high
stress levels.
Hot stone massage may not be appropriate for certain
conditions such as Hypertension, Parkinson’s Disease
and people with metal implants. Full assessment is necessary to determine
if hot stone therapy is right for you. Your therapist will advise you
during the consultation if it is appropriate.
